Rubber Rest: 9 Tips To Protect Tires During Storage

Most of us probably don’t spend much time thinking about how to protect tires when we are storing our vehicles – whether it’s a truck, car, SUV or a RV. If could be an afterthought, and not something to think about. However, if you’re going on that summer vacation or taking off for a long period of time, making sure your vehicle’s tires are in tip-top shape when you return requires a time investment.

Here are a few tips and reminders that you can follow in order to protect your tires, especially during the summer season – when exposure to heat may damage them. By following these tips, you will be able to extend the life of your tires and save yourself from a headache and unnecessary spending.

1. Check the condition of each tire before storage

This is the first and the foremost thing that you need to consider while storing the tires. Check the condition of the rubber and look at whether there are any cracks. This will help you to compare the state of the tire later when you re-use them. Inspect the depth of the tire before storing them; you need to replace the tire with a new one if it’s nearly worn out.

Apart from this, check the pressure of the tire and adjust it to the suggested PSI. Make a checklist before observing the above things and check it off against each one of them as it’s very important to consider these prior to storing.

2. Clean and dry the tires thoroughly

The best idea before storing your tires is to clean them thoroughly with a suggested solution. In case any dirt is remaining on the surface of the wheel, it may lead to corrosion. By the time you will notice, it would probably be too late. Once you have cleaned the tire, it a good idea to dry it. The consequence of not cleaning the tire will be that the moisture will affect the quality of the tire or wheel.

Some people also suggest removing the center cap of the wheel or tire because while storing, the center cap can pull or twist the shape of the sidewalls and tread which may cause damage to it. Once you have accomplished these tasks, your tires are ready to be stored.

  • DIY for making homemade solution. An individual might not have solutions to clean their tires. No, you can make one from the things that are already available. Simply mix one part of vinegar with water, stir it well and the solution is ready.

3. Store indoors

Storing tires indoors is the most important aspect you need to keep in mind. This is done so as to protect the tires or wheels from the ultraviolet rays coming from the sun. It’s suggested to store them somewhere underground like your basement or even in a garage or workshop. Even if you don’t have enough space to store your tires, you can always look up a local self-storage facility to safely store them indoors.

4. Store tires horizontally and vertically

If you are planning to store your tires with the wheels mounted then you are lucky because doing it that way would provide you with ample storing ways as compared to just storing them bare. Consider the ways listed below to store your tires

Stack them one on the top of other tires but ensure that you do not stack them too high because if they drop, or while bringing them down, they might get damaged. Another reason for not stacking them too high is for safety purposes because the higher the stack, the more unstable it will become.

If you are storing your tire without wheels mounted on them, then you should wrap them properly in garbage or plastic bags and keep them standing with the tread facing downwards. This is the only safest way to store your tires if you are looking further to store them without wheels mounted on them.

5. Store away from sunlight

Your tires are sensitive to harsh temperatures, whether extreme heat or cold. The UV rays will either make the oil present in the rubber evaporate or will more or less cook your tire. The ultimate way to keep the tires from dry rotting is to restrain sun exposure whenever possible.

6. Store each tire in an airtight plastic bag

The best way to slow down the aging process of the tires is to store them in tire tote bags or garbage bags. These covering can be obtained at most auto parts or general stores. They will make the storing process neater and it will be easier for you to carry them from one place to another.

7. Keep tires in a cool and dry place

As mentioned above, there is a recommended specific temperature in which the tires are to be stored. Too much heat will make the oil present in the rubber evaporate and freezing temperatures might make the tires brittle and will no longer act as a rubber. Both these circumstances are not suitable for your tires so in order to protect them, ensure that you are storing them above zero degrees or at room temperature.

8. Keep the tires away from motorized devices

Do not forget to keep them away from any electrical motors that emit carbon monoxide as they are the sources of ozone. Keep them away from sung pumps, furnaces, etc.

9. Avoid storing your vehicles with the weight of the tires

Another tip is that you should not store your vehicle with the weight of the car on the tires for an extended period of time. if you are doing this, then you may notice when you attempt to drive the car again that you have a flat spot on each tire. Since the tire’s surface is made of rubber, which is a malleable, it can change its shape from perfectly round to damaged, with dry rot and flat spot.

Damaged tires mean you would have to spend a lot of money in order to replace them – not to mention that the efforts that you would have been making to store the tires safely will go waste. The long term inactivity is considered to be more harmful to the tires as compared to driving the car occasionally and allowing the tire to be in use. In case you are leaving your car on the ground with the tires on and without jack stands, then make sure you over-inflate the tires. The recommended PSI is usually etched inside the driver’s side door frame and in car manuals.

Find Shade: 7 Tips to Help Protect Your RV From the Sun

Just like any other machine with an electrical motor, an RV can also be affected by the rays coming from the sun. It’s not just the exterior but also the interior that may be damaged while the beaming sun sizzles everything in sight. RVs are not designed in such a way that they can absorb heat. The sun can prematurely age the paint, tires and all the other features that look extremely beautiful when you bought it. It’s not just our skin that gets affected by the ultraviolet rays but also the RVs.

During these bright sunny days, the UV rays coming from the sun are at their strongest and the exterior of your RV will feel the brunt. Here are some practical ways that would not cost an arm and leg and at the same time protect your RV from the sunlight.

1. Get the RVs windows tinted

If you don’t want to use the cover, here’s a solution: Consider window tint. These days, nanotechnology is being used in tints and is comprised of thin layers. They can block almost up to 99% of harmful UV rays coming from the sun. Another advantage that you could get by getting your windows tinted is that it will protect an individual’s eyes while driving. But with the advantages come the disadvantages. The disadvantage of getting your window tinted is that it will be difficult for the person who is driving during rainy days and challenging to see the surrounding objects in low-light environments.

2. Wash and dry the exterior periodically

If your RV is parked under the sun for a longer period, then it will be making its surface dull and the paint will start to fade. By washing the vehicle now and then, you can get rid of the dust particles sticking onto the surface. Just like humans require water to keep ourselves hydrated during the hot summer days, in the same manner, our vehicle also requires daily water in the form of cleaning especially in the hot summer days. In a way, it keeps them hydrated and slows down the ageing of their engine.

There are a few steps that need to be followed in order. The first and foremost step is to wipe away the accumulated dust. This can be done either with a dry cloth or else with some water. The next step would be to bath your recreational vehicle and while doing this, an automotive cleaner can be used.

Another reason as to why you should wash your vehicle thoroughly is that it reduces the oxidization and heat coming from the sun. If you will follow this after an interval of the time then you would be successful in protecting your vehicles from the sun’s rays.

It is suggested not to wash your vehicles in direct sunlight. Some argue that it’s awful for the vehicle’s finish while others believe that it will make the job harder. There is a simple reason behind it. The sunlight will allow the water and cleaner to dry up quickly leaving behind spots of water.

3. Make use of sun protecting windshields

If you find the option of getting your RV’s window tinted a bit steep then you could go with the option of purchasing windshields that could protect your RV from the UV rays. The difference between the prices of both options is quite evident. Apart from this, if you’re using a sunshade, it’s always a better idea to cover the steering wheel with a towel. This will assist with keeping the contact temperature of your steering wheel down. Another thing that you could do is keep the windows of the RV slightly open. Even a little crack will elevate ventilation and help to keep your vehicle cool.

4. Monitor and adjust tire pressure

Exposure to the sun for an extended period can not only oxidize the coating done on the exterior of your vehicle but also affects the tires. It is suggested to have your tires checked before summer shows up and afterwards catch up with monthly inspection throughout the summer days. This will assist you with forestalling abrupt setbacks and mishaps.

5. Reflectorized sun panel

A reflectorized sun panel will help in absorbing 96% of the sunlight regardless of whatsoever is the position of the sun in the sky. It is a proven fact that this sun panel can absorb every single proton of light. This panel is made up of seven layers and each layer is 50 to 100 nanometers thick and because of which the panel can absorb sunlight.

6. Wax your RV or motorhome

Just like human needs sun scream to protect their skin from the UV rays, in the same manner, your recreational vehicle needs wax. It is a proven fact that the rays coming from the sun can affect the human skin and various motor vehicles negatively. Various types of wax are available in the market and it’s very much important for you to understand which one out of these will give maximum protection to your vehicle.

Cleaner waxes– these waxes contain natural wax ,including carnauba wax. It cleans and polishes in just one step.

Finishing sealant– this wax is mainly made up of synthetic materials and apart from protecting the car, this gives the car excellent finishing.

Finishing wax– As the name suggests, this is made up of natural wax and is more often used by people to give their vehicles a great finish but it does not clean the surface of the vehicle.

Hybrids– this wax is a mixture of synthetic and natural wax and it helps in polishing and cleaning altogether.

Paint sealant– This wax is completely made up of man-made and synthetic material

Natural wax– This is a kind of wax which is made up of natural material

Cleaner sealant– this wax is completely made up of synthetic materials and helps in polishing, cleaning and protecting altogether

7. Apply conditioners to protect your leather seats

Just like a human skin needs extra care so that we could protect ourselves with the UV rays, an RV needs extra care in the same manner. If you know that the seats of your RV are made of leather, then you must know much and to what extent it may get affected when exposed to sun or relatively higher temperature than suggested for a prolonged period. To keep the seats cool you can apply specialized conditioner. This could help you keep your RV cool during hot sunny days.

How To Choose Between Indoor vs. Outdoor RV Storage

If you are planning to buy an RV, one of the first things you will consider is how often it will be used. The answer to that question will vary based on a number of factors … Are you currently retired? If not, how much vacation time can you get from your current job? Do you live in a tropical, semi-tropical, or non-tropical climate, and how close is your location to the nearest campgrounds?

The reality is, many RV owners only use their RVs for a few months per year. This is often during the summer months and on long holiday weekends. Not all RV owners are fans of campgrounds and many of these campgrounds are closed throughout the winter months. This is why RV storage is one of the next major considerations for RV owners after their purchase.

First you will have to consider whether it is more feasible to store your RV inside or outside. The next step would be to determine the viability of storing the RV at home as opposed to utilizing a professional RV storage facility. Here is a list of advantages and disadvantages associated with each option to help you make an informed decision.

Advantages of Indoor RV Storage

Indoor RV storage has two major advantages including protection and security. They may sound like the same thing, but they represent two different aspects in this context.

Protection

This refers to the defense and shelter your RV will receive from the elements when stored in an indoor unit. The three major elements are precipitation, humidity, and temperature, and each type will not only affect how your RV looks over time, but also how it operates. The water, moisture, and the fluctuation of hot and cold air will affect your RV’s paint job as well as the efficacy of some internal and external parts, not to mention the possibility of mold and fungi.

Security

Security in this context refers to protection from theft, vandalism, and damages. When your RV is in an indoor storage unit, only yourself and employees of the facility will have access to it. Therefore, the chance of theft is slim. However, if it does occur, you have someone to hold responsible. You can also discuss various insurance and liability clauses with the facility to ensure you and your RV are protected. With all things considered, some would say that indoor storage can actually extend the life of your RV when compared to outdoor options.

Disadvantages of Indoor RV Storage

There really isn’t a disadvantage to indoor RV storage per se, but there are a few factors that will encourage some owners to shy away from this option.

Cost

Indoor RV storage is not as economical as outdoor storage. In fact, in some areas, indoor RV storage facilities are almost twice as expensive as outdoor storage facilities. For many people, this is reason enough to consider the opposing option.

Availability and Distance

Even when affordability is not much of an issue for some owners, locating an indoor storage facility can be a challenge. In some cities, indoor storage units for RVs are few and far between. This makes it a hassle for many people to get to the storage location and as such, some RV owners either decide not to use an indoor facility, or not use their RV’s as often as they would like. So then, what would be the point of having an RV in pristine condition, if you can’t find the time to access and utilize it?

Advantages of Outdoor RV Storage

There are two options for outdoor RV storage. You can choose to store it yourself (if possible) or pay for an outdoor storage facility.

Home Storage

If you choose to store your RV at home, the good news is that it’s always close by and can easily facilitate an impromptu trip. You can also store ready-to-go snacks and toiletries in the RV making the packing-to-go process even easier. For this same reason, you will probably use it a lot more than you would if it was tucked away in an indoor storage facility, which would probably be miles away. Another major advantage of outdoor self-storage is an extra bedroom if family members drop by. It serves as an extra self-contained living area for short term stay.

Storage Facility

Outdoor storage is considerably more economical than indoor storage even if you choose to utilize an RV storage facility, as opposed to your own lawn or curb. There are also more outdoor storage facilities in most cities, which means that you are more likely to find one available and close to your home.

Disadvantages of Outdoor RV Storage

One of the main disadvantages of outdoor storage is of course, the elements. However, small critters and animal droppings can also be an issue.

Cleaning and Upkeep

If you choose to store your RV outside your home, you will need to invest time and money into washing, waxing, and other various upkeep to maintain its lustrous exterior. I would imagine that the hearty scrubbing of bird droppings and/or tree sap is not one of the activities you look forward to at the end of each week. Even if it’s being stored professionally, it will require the occasional cleaning, which you will either do yourself or pay to get done.

City or State Regulations

You may not be allowed to park your RV at home based on regulations in some cities and states. This means that you may be forced to find a paid outdoor storage facility.

Personal Inconveniences

In some areas city regulations may not be a factor, and parking the RV on your lawn may be the easiest choice, but that depends on how you feel about your lawn and whether you like it green or yellow. In addition, if it’s parked in your concrete driveway, your tires may degrade over time and need replacing when you are ready to go on your next trip, not to mention the maneuvering it may take to park your everyday vehicle. A paid outdoor storage facility will bypass city regulation, space, and lawn issues, but the elements will still be a factor on your RV’s paint job.

Vandalism/Theft

Another disadvantage of outdoor storage is the possibility of theft or vandalism. This is true regardless of whether you are storing the RV at home or in a storage facility. Some facilities will provide a basic level of security with an active guard on duty, guard dogs, and /or electric fences, but it will generally not be as secure as an indoor facility.

Docked: 11 Tips On How to Store A Boat Long term

Storing a boat is not a simple task. The process requires time and paying close attention to the details. Once you have done it, that’s it – you are leaving your boat on its own for a long time.

Here we will share important tips and things to watch out for during this process. Whether you want to winterize a boat (prepare it for winter season), or don’t want to sail for a longer period, this advice is meant to be practical year-round.

Where should you keep it? There are a couple of options to choose from, yet we always suggest indoor, dry storage for the best results. If you opt to store your boat on the water or outdoors, the preventive measures will be different.

1.     Preparation is the key

This is the very first thing on the list of tips we want you to know. The reason for it is simply because this step is occasionally overlooked.

Generally speaking, we are going to divide it into two steps.

The first one is to make a proper plan so you don’t forget any detail in the process. Write everything down as you read and imagine the whole process. Also, some ideas may come to mind – so, don’t overlook them.

And the other is to make sure you have enough time and patience. The process can get overwhelming, so focus on the outcome and the result!

It’s worth it!

2.     Take your boat out one last time

The importance of this one is probably obvious to you. This is an overall check of the boat itself. Act like a perfectionist during this ride. Try to find all and every minor issue that seems to occur for the first time, or you noticed it before but didn’t give much importance to it.

Pay close attention to the engine since it is the heart of all vehicles. Also look for corrosion or cracks that cause water spills during the ride, since these can cause damage if they are left aside for a long time.

3.     Drain the systems

Draining the systems is a must if you have decided to go with dry storage for your boat. It means you have to remove all the water out of your boat components.

Afterward, the ideal move would be to fill the components with antifreeze, assuming you are leaving your boat during the harsh winter season. The antifreeze will prevent any ice from forming inside the components which would damage them if not taken care of.

4.     Take care of the engine

As this is the main part of your boat, it should be a priority.  Make sure to wash it in detail and remove all the sand, dirt, or other elements that inevitably accumulate there.

Don’t forget to do a thorough inspection of the whole engine and perform general maintenance, including changing the oil and filters. Lastly, fill up your tank to full and let the engine run for 20-30 minutes. Leaving the gas tank empty for longer periods may result in corrosion because of the high humidity and exposed surfaces.

5.     Remove added parts and take care of electronics

All the things that are not the main parts of the boat should be taken away somewhere else. As long as they are small enough to be taken with ease, there is a better place for them to spend the winter holidays. This includes all the equipment, clothes, gadgets, and electronics in general.

And when it comes to electronics, batteries especially, take extra care. If the temperatures are going below freezing point, you shouldn’t keep them there. Take them home or to a warmer place.

6.     Keep the boat close to your reach

An ideal place for storing your boat should be in your property, in a dry place, protected from the sun. However, this option is only viable if you have a big facility capable of providing you this comfort (e.g. a big garage).

If your property’s indoor surface area does not let you do this, other options can be renting a place for your boat in a boat storage facility. Renting an indoor spot might be the most expensive option but it is by far the safest way to go.

Least favored dry-storage options would be your property’s open space areas or renting an outdoor spot for storing your boat.

7.     Washing and waxing

You are almost ready to store your boat away. What you need to do next is wash off the whole surface of the boat with water.

When it comes to clearing the fiberglass, you should apply a non-abrasive cleaner spray before washing off the surface. Afterward, give it two to three hours for everything to dry off properly and prepare for massive waxing!

Waxing is not mandatory, but if you decide to go for it, detailed washing beforehand is a must. Apply your favorite wax product and buff one area at a time (preferably with a power buffer).

8.     Cover the whole boat

When doing this, you want to think about the harshest winter conditions to prevent all the possible consequences. Our warm recommendation is to have a professional shrink wrap your vessel from head to toe. It will cost you a little bit of extra money, however, it is way more economical to do that than to pay for possible damage repairs when the season starts again.

9.     Close the exhaust vents

This one’s simplicity equals in its importance. Seal all the vents with duct tape multiple times. This prevents insects, pests, and all the critters from reaching the boats’ important components, and potentially damaging them.

10.  Check the boat periodically

If the vessel is stored in your garage or backyard, there is no reason not to check it every week. However, if you stored your boat further away from your home, try to check on it every two weeks or so.

This is important because it is crucial for the maintenance of the boats’ overall condition. Your task when checking on the boat will be figuring out if there are any possible issues. Always check the engine, but don’t forget about potential mildew spots, oil leaks, or even holes in the duct tape that you sealed on the exhaust vents.

11.  Enjoy the process

It may get exhausting, but don’t forget why you’re doing this. You love nature, are passionate about the water, and of course the vessels. For some, it’s a hobby and for others just a way to spend a weekend. Yet it is the same driving force that brings a smile on your face every time you turn the engine on. Therefore, this is much more than a to-do list. It is an introductory guide to all the fun and joy that’s waiting for you next season.

Road Map: 9 Tips to Prepare For Your First RV Trip

An RV road trip is a fun way to travel with your family or friends across the country. It is a great way to explore the outdoors with flexibility and freedom. Before you start your first RV trip, you will need to prepare for it.

Here is a list of tips that will enable you to enjoy your first RV trip.

1. Know Your RV

If you are an RV beginner with little road experience, you will need to get to know the RV. If you don’t own an RV, you can rent it for a day. It is best to try several types of RV before you make the choice.

With so many sizes and types of RVs, it is important to find one that fits your driving style. This will help maximize the fun on the road. Learn how the motorhome works. It will enable you to assess any problem that arises on your road trip and fix it.

Take time to inspect the RV. This is important when you want to have a safe road trip. Check the RV batteries. Flush the water tank and check for leaks. Check all appliances (fridge, microwave, and air conditioner) used in the RV to see if they work.

Inspect the interiors of the cabin. Spring clean the interiors and sanitize. This ensures that you have a fresh bed, blankets, and clean cabinets and shelves. Depending on the number of people traveling, you should choose a size that is right for everyone.

2. Practice Driving the RV

Driving an RV on the road is different from driving a car. Learn about the roads you plan to drive on. Take a small trip on similar terrain. When you practice driving, you will be able to ascend hills, switch lanes, and park without much of an effort.

With practice, you will be able to understand the intricacies of driving an RV. You will also be able to adjust your driving style to match the specific needs of driving an RV on the road.

Before the road trip, you can also choose to watch a few videos on how to navigate an RV. Gain knowledge about electrical hookups, sewage hookups, and water hookups. Apart from this read the RV manual on auxiliary battery, propane tank, and generator.

Understanding how these lifelines of an RV work will help you drive confidently on the road. This will enable you to understand any issues with these lifelines and troubleshoot.

3. Road Service and RV Insurance

Research road services specializing in RV. Only a limited number of road service companies will tow the trailer. Ensure that insurance covers all aspects of the RV trip.

  • Does the insurance cover the trailer?
  • Does the motorhome policy cover the towed vehicle?
  • Do you need separate road service coverage?

4. Book the Campground and Confirm Reservations

Research the list of campgrounds on the route and confirm reservations. Pick a trailer park or campground that supports RV hookups. Most of these campgrounds get booked fast. It is best to make reservations before you start the road trip.

Research the pricing and fees charged by the campgrounds. You will have to pay the fees upfront when you book the trip. If you need anything more at the trailer park, you will have to pay extra.

5. Create a Campground or Trailer Park Checklist

As this is your first RV trip, you will not be aware of the campground routine. A checklist ensures that everything is as it should be.

  • Check for obstacles on the ground.
  • Locate water, electrical, and sewage hookups. Park the RV close to the hookups.
  • Choke the wheels to secure the rig.
  • Switch the electrical appliances on after connecting to the electrical hookup.
  • Attach the sewage hose to the sewage hookups.

Gain knowledge about the different dump stations along the route you intend to take. When you are aware of the sewage dump stations, you will be able to schedule drop-offs along the way.

6. Check Weather Forecast, Road Conditions, Closures, and Construction

Visit websites that report on road conditions, closures, and construction. Check the route you will be traveling and see the current road conditions. It is frustrating if you run into road closures and construction.

Always choose a route and destination that everyone will enjoy. If you are traveling with kids, you will need to have kid’s activities on the route. This will ensure fun for all on the road trip.

There is nothing you can do about the weather. Before you start the road trip, it is advisable that you check the weather forecast. If there is rain, ice, snow, or hail, it can spoil your road trip.

When you are aware of the weather forecast, you will be able to prepare for all types of weather conditions.

7. Pack the Right Stuff

Make a packing list. Pack essentials such as first aid kit, trail shoes, headlamp, and rain-resistant clothing. Even though you can pack a lot of things in your RV, you should be careful about what you carry.

Weight distribution is important in large vehicles. As you will be carrying a lot of fuel and water, you should be careful about what else you pack. Make a list of things you will need depending on the number of people traveling in the RV.

Pack kitchen supplies, food, medications, and toiletries. If your pets are joining you on the road trip, you will also need to pack pet supplies.

8. Setting Up and Breaking Down Camp

Setting up camp is often a big challenge. This is especially true if this is your first RV road trip. After parking and leveling the RV, you will need to hook it up to all the systems. It’s now time to unpack and enjoy all the comforts of your RV.

When you break down camp, you should pack all the things carefully. Shut down all the electrical appliances. Secure all the belongings in the cabin so that they don’t fall down when you drive.

Before you leave camp, visit the dump station so that you can empty the black water. This will help you save time and travel light and easy.

9. Rent an RV and Hit the Road

Rent an RV and enjoy the experience of your first road trip. Get away from day-to-day life and enjoy a vacation with your family and friends. Don’t stress about anything and prepare yourself for an amazing experience.

The tips for your first RV road trip will help you enjoy a smooth ride on the road. A little bit of planning is all it takes to have an awesome trip with your loved ones.

RV Trends: What’s New for 2020

The good life is in full swing heading into the 2020 RV season. Manufacturers continue to innovate and reinvent one of America’s favorite pastimes. Hitting the road has never been more fun. The RVs on the horizon are better than ever, reshaping what we’ve always loved about them, all while taking them to a new level of comfort and accessibility. One of the hallmark 2020 trends in RV development and sales is the ever-increasing ability buyers have to customize their vehicles. Whether it’s a 5th wheel, class A, or a stealth van, designers are giving owners more choices on color, build and size. It’s a great year to be in the market for a new RV. Here’s a quick look at some of the defining trends as we head into 2020.

The New Manufacturer Motto: Custom Everything

RV competition is fiercer than ever, and RV companies are pulling out all the stops to close sales. That means they are going farther than ever to give buyers what they want. In 2020, RVs come in a wide variety of configurations that can be adjusted for every owner. Everything new to market will likely come in multiple options. Of course, higher-end options will cost more money, but it’s great news more selections are even options. Buyers can choose colors, layouts, storage, interior electronics systems and seating configurations that fit their family size and lifestyle.

A lot of RV buyers are using the custom options to personalize with finishes and hi-tech appliances for their RVs. They want efficiency in their layouts and want to be able to maximize utility, but still want to make a statement! They want their RV to be part of the story of who they are. RV makers are doing a great job empowering customers as we move into 2020 and beyond.

Smaller Spaces, Better Places

Even though there are still a ton of Class A RVs on the road, new buyers brought into the market in 2019 and going into 2020 are looking for smaller spaces. New buyers want an RV that facilitates their active lifestyle; it’s just enough to keep them comfortable until they’re ready to get out hiking, rock climbing, fishing, or stop into a local coffee shop to do some work. New RVs that use outdoor space well are going to be extremely popular. Indeed, we’ve seen a lot of companies responding to customers who want the outdoors to mesh more with RV living. Buyers are going to see a lot more pullout stoves, portable outdoor showers, swivel tables that can double as a kitchen prep station or an outdoor workspace. Even mini 5th wheels are going to keep getting tech and design upgrades to make them more functional.

People still want those smaller spaces to be comfortable. Build quality certainly has a premium over square footage in the newest RVs. In 2020, people will be happy to pay more for better quality. “Buy once, cry once”, the old adage goes. Owners are after the best quality premium finishes they can find and are willing to sacrifice the roomy bathroom to do get it.

The Rise of Multi-Use Features

Multi-use features are going to be a staple in the hottest 2020 RVs. Engineers are pushing the RV industry forward more than ever before and coming up with ways items inside can be converted into something with multiple purposes. Conversions no longer stop at dining areas that can convert into beds. In 2020, buyers will see more exterior shower tents to maximize inside space and dinettes that fold into the floor or can shift into a work desk. Don’t worry, seating areas still convert into beds, but they’re better. More RVs manufacturers are finding ways to install bunk beds in their RVs, great for families with multiple kids or road trips with friends. As more RV components make their way outside, the leftover space can be used for a variety of storage needs.

Class C Still on Fire

The van life movement continues to win RV fans around the world. Outdoor enthusiasts, retiree weekenders, and people just plain sick of the rat race love the flexibility and comfort of some of the new Class C vans. With the smaller vehicle size, owners can pull into parking lots and park areas without having to worry if they’ll fit. The wheelbase or length isn’t a concern and doesn’t limit where and when they can go somewhere.

Class C demand has pushed a lot of design and manufacturing work into the industry. Buyers can find a huge amount of RV options with full showers, toilets, kitchenettes, and even multiple beds. Some new RVs are working with skylights, furniture that can shift and transform, and making the cabin able to change into a lovely dining area. Look for the versatility of the Class C move even further ahead in 2020.

Greater Community for the RV Crowd

Anyone who’s owned or rented an RV on a summer road trip will attest to the sense of friendship and community at campsites across the country. There’s something undeniable about the bond between RV owners that draws people out every year. More recently, the RV industry has taken advantage of technology to bring people even closer. In 2020, look for more apps on camp reviews, trip advice, and community gatherings that connect RV owners throughout the United States. As more people come online and participate, the community is going to become even tighter, which then spurs even greater demand for RVs and a fulfilling life on the road.

There’s never been a more exciting time to own an RV. Vans Recreational vehicles come in more shapes and sizes than ever and have a massive number of features for any use case. Whether you’re looking for something to be self-sustaining or are looking for something to use on the weekend to take in some of this beautiful country, there’s something out there for you. Momentum around RV living and outdoor recreation away from life’s hustle and bustle is at an all-time high and is driving people to explore RV choices. Looking ahead, 2020 is going to be another exciting year for buyers and sellers alike.

As cabin fever sets in this winter, you may find yourself longing to get out – particularly, out on the open road taking in the beauty of nature from the warmth and comfort of your RV.

Whether you find yourself feeling listless in a snowbound landscape with subzero temperatures, or bracing in the chill of the desert in winter, you don’t have to miss out on RV adventures just because of the season. With the right preparation and planning, you can join the growing number of RV owners popularizing a radical form of recreation: winter RV camping.

What is RV Camping?

Camping generally means you stay overnight amidst nature, to rest and recharge or to explore the beauty around you by hiking, biking, mountain climbing, etc. Similarly, RV camping means doing all that, with the added comfort and shelter of a home on wheels.

Why Winter RV Camping?

Winter RV camping lets you see your favorite state and national parks in a whole new way. Familiar landscapes appear fresh and new with the branches of the trees blanketed in snow. Without the hustle and bustle of summer camping crowds, you can experience the true quiet and stillness of the landscape around you. Winter RV camping provides an unparalleled experience communing with nature for those intrepid enough to embark on this chilly adventure.

RV Maintenance

While it’s important to properly maintain your RV year-round, when planning a winter RV camping trip it’s absolutely essential to gear up your RV for colder conditions and possible inclement weather. Making the right preparations ahead of time will ensure the comfort and enjoyment of you and your passengers. The following 15 tips should be a part of your checklist to get ready for RV Winter Camping.

1. Protection from the Cold

Baby, it’s cold outside! Your RV’s insulation is going to be the first and most important line of defense when it comes to keeping the cold out. Check out your existing insulation; consider upgrading all around for an older RV or adding additional insulation in any place that looks sparse or damaged.

You could look at padding the floor of the RV with foam boards which are easily available at any RV maintenance shop. The winds are ruthless during the winters and they tend to freeze the pipes and water tanks which are under the RV; the same foam boards can be used for coating these tanks to protect them and keep them insulated.

2. Protect Your Pipes

An RV is technically a vehicle, but it’s really more like a home on wheels. And like any other home, it’s important to protect its plumbing and fittings during the winter. To ensure smooth operation during your winter RV camping expedition, there’s a few things you can do to prep your pipes for the road.

Begin with checking the pipes for any leakage and rust. After you’re sure everything’s in good working condition, then you can install an internal freshwater tank, add anti-freeze to your holding tanks, and wrap your pipes with heat tape. Keep a space heater onboard to keep the internal plumbing warm.

3. Perform an Engine Check

The engine is the heart of the RV. Part of this heart runs on batteries, so ensure that your batteries are fully charged and show no signs of damage. It is always better to use batteries which can be fully charged because the other ones tend to die out faster in the cold. Add antifreeze and water to the engine to prevent it from freezing. You can also use an engine block heater to keep your engine warm.

4. Service the Heating System

The RV heating system needs to be serviced by a professional technician to get it clean and ready for winter travel. Always carry a dehumidifier, which would prevent any kind of condensation happening inside the vehicle which could lead to damage to the RV components.

5. Check RV Windows

Check the sliding glass panels to see if they are working and shutting completely leaving no gaps. Replace any aging, missing, or damaged weather stripping to keep cold air drafts at bay.  You can use thick drapes to cover the window panes which will help keep the interior warm and provide further protection from the cold.

6. Don’t Forget the Vents

Most RVs usually have a sunroof or a ceiling vent, which are plenty useful for a summer trip – but must be covered with warm foam padding to prevent the cold from coming inside your home on wheels.

7. Prevent Frozen Jacks

When you park your RV at a campsite, there is a possibility of the stabilizing jack to get frozen and stuck to the ground. Carry some wooden planks with you and place them under your jacks so that you can conveniently drive off without worrying about breaking loose any frozen jacks.

8. Keep the Refrigerator Warm

This piece of equipment requires to be properly insulated too to avoid freezing of the gases which flow through its pipes. A small space heater can be placed close just to ensure the refrigerator does not catch a cold.

9. Stock Your Wardrobe

Make sure you carry warm clothes and some extra sets of them in case of any kind unforeseen circumstances. Even in climates where you don’t expect to encounter snow, having an extra pair of boots, a coat, and warm pants or long johns is always a good idea.

10. Warm Accessories

As you are heading out on your winter RV camping adventure, grab a stack of extra blankets. Emergencies aside, blankets are a must for staying cozy while enjoying a cup of cocoa or snuggling into your warm bed at the end of a great day.

A spare blow dryer can come handy in case any clothes or equipment require defrosting, and packing hats and gloves goes without saying.

11. Stay On Track

Bringing an additional, portable GPS tracker as a backup is always a good idea when heading out into the wilderness or roads unfamiliar to you.

12. RV Food Stock

Always carry extra food for your loved ones and family members that you are travelling with. Stock a few extra gallons of water in the heated storage space.

13. RV Bedding

Everyone on a vacation wants to sleep well and be cosy, ensure you carry sleeping bags which are warm and will protect you from the cold outside.

14. RV Generator

Always carry a back generator, which should be running on Gasoline.

15. Don’t Forget the Cash

This is one thing that you need to carry extra and that can help you get out in any kind of emergency.

A lot of prepping is required for a successful winter RV camping trip, but the effort is worth it. The empty campsites make it more peaceful and relaxing.

The Best Gear for Texas Bass Fishing

If you are just beginning to explore the world of bass fishing and angling, you must have heard about the right gear making all the difference between a fruitless fishing session and a bountiful one. If, however, you have been doing it for some time, you already know this first-hand. If you look in the market, you will find literally hundreds of kinds of bass fishing gears and baits. How do you decide which ones to take and which ones to leave? Read on to learn about the 5 key pieces of bass fishing gear and what to look for.

The Right Fishing Rod

Your fishing rod will literally be the first thing in your hand. You have to choose one that feels right in terms of weight and length, and at the same time, it has to be sensitive enough to signal the engagement of the fish with the bait. Then, the rod should allow you to engage the fish until it tires out, without breaking in the process.

People generally go for a medium power rod as their first choice. However, you should also try a heavy powered one just to compare the differences between the two. The next thing to consider is the tip of the rod that facilitates fastening and unfastening of the hooks. Another parameter to look at is the grip of the handle.

fishing

The Right Fishing Line

Moving on to the next element, we will now talk about the fishing line that will be most useful for you. Essentially, there are three kinds of fishing lines available in the market: braided, monofilament, and fluorocarbon. Monofilament fishing lines were the first kind to be developed, and have largely become obsolete today. The braided ones have an advantage of not stretching and thus, imparting higher strength. However, fluorocarbon lines are most useful when it comes to invisibility. These lines are almost impossible to see in water, thus, increasing the likelihood of getting a bite.

Whichever kind of fishing line you ultimately choose, make sure that it is long enough. Generally, a minimum length of 300 yards is recommended. Also, don’t forget to check the pound test of the fishing line before buying it. The pound test indicates the weight a line can withstand without breaking. The recommended value for bass fishing is 8 pounds.

The Right Fishing Reel

Again, the sheer variety of fishing reels will make your head spin. The ideal reel will let you hook a big bass and land them with finesse. You will find reels composed of many materials, like aluminium, carbon compounds, and graphite. While aluminium is considered to be the strongest, graphite is most resistant to underwater corrosion and is lightweight.

You should also check the quality of the reel before purchasing it, and look for any ill-fitting or loose parts. Ideally, it should be durable and neat in design; having a smooth movement is an added advantage.

rods bait rental

The Right Bait

Just as other gear for bass fishing spoils you with options, why should bait be any different? Before you check out tackle shops and get flustered and confused by the variety of bait available, do a bit of research about the kind of bait most preferred by bass. Rigged, worm-like baits are classic bestsellers for good reason. The choice of your bait will also depend on whether you want to try fishing in dense lakes or just on the top waters.

Some widely recommended baits and lures include plastic worms, crankbaits in the color of natural water (and also some in the color of murky water), jigs, frogs, spinner baits, etc. You will be able to figure out all this, and more, once you start researching first-hand reviews and recommendations. Most of the available baits and lures have worked for different people, and you have to make a calculated guesses at buying a few. Whether it works for you or not, only time will tell.

Hooks and Terminal Tackle

These will come in very handy when you need to add a bit of weight to catch bass. If you have the right assortment of hooks (worm hooks and dropshot hooks, for example), swivels like barrel swivels and split rings, and weights like dropshot and bullet weights in your box, you will be able to adjust the fishing gear to your conditions, and to your satisfaction.

fishing tackle

Sun Protection

Sunscreen cream or spray is an important part of any fishing trip, to prevent sunburns and skin injury due to prolonged exposure to the sun. Good-quality sunglasses, preferably polarized, will provide you the best visibility even in the most reflective or murky waters.

Desirable Gear for Fishing Trips

While the gear mentioned above will get you through a fishing session, certain gear will make your fishing session more comfortable and even more enjoyable. None of the following are required for bass fishing per se, but are highly recommended by novices and pros alike:

  • A bait bucket for keeping live bait will be very handy in case you decide to try your luck at bass fishing with live baits instead of plastic ones.
  • A casting net for catching live bait, if you decide to.
  • Weighing scales that will let you hang your catch and display the numbers that will make enviable photographs.
  • Multi-tools or knives, for unforeseen maneuvers that you might need to perform on your bass fishing trip.
  • Gloves for handling fish.
  • Hook remover and pliers to remove the caught fish from the hook in case it is swallowed beyond reach.
  • Flash light to improve visibility in darker conditions.
  • First aid box, to manage those little cuts and bruises that can come with outdoor adventure.
  • Insect repellent for protecting your skin against ravenous mosquitoes and other curious insects.
  • Small towels for miscellaneous uses.
  • A good camera to flaunt your prized catches.
  • Some extra fishing line, just in case of breakage or other unforeseen reasons.

With these key pieces of bass fishing gear in your tackle box and on your boat, you will be ready for a great bass fishing session. Help out your fellow anglers – if there is something we missed that should be on this list, or if you have a favorite lure or line you just can’t fish without, let us know in the comments below. Good luck out there!
